A rare work dating from 1954 and composed for Eugene Cruft, a leading London bassist and teacher. Maconchy was an important but undervalued British composer and wrote a work of great inventiveness and character, utilising the full range of the instrument. Advanced, though always idiomatic, these modern but lyrical miniatures make a useful and important addition to the solo repertoire. Music to both challenge and enjoy.
