"The title refers to Porto, the 'city of Granite' and is in one continuous movement with two distinct parts divided by contrasting interludes - the first part is highly rhythmic, the second more lyrical. The composer's jazz and rock career influences the energy of the first section, while in the later part he alludes to typical Portuguese accordian-accompanied folksong, recreated in transparent textures with the bass playing high over a cello drone."
