SOMM-BEECHAM 11 - SIR THOMAS BEECHAM, Bart., C.H.

Beecham first conducted Handel's Solomon in the concert hall in March 1928 with the old Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London's Queen's Hall. Thereafter, he conducted Solomon in full on six more occasions between April 1928 and November 1955, just prior to commencing this recording.

In several respects, this is very much Sir Thomas' own versionof the score. He restored several of the airs which were seldom heard and wrote additional accompaniments for nearly every number.

Of Handel, he wrote:
Since his time, mankind has heard no music written for voice which can even feebly rival his grandeur of build and tone, nobility and tenderness of melody, scholastic skill and ingenuity, and inexhaustible variety of effort.

Released in collaboration with the Sir Thomas Beecham Trust in support of the Scholarship Fund.
