The Sh'ma is the central prayer in Judaism, a setting a text from the bokk of Deuteronomy Chapter 6, Verses 4-9. The prayer is an affirmation of Judaism and a declaration of faith in one God.

This is a concert rather than a liturgical setting and is for Soprano/Tenor, Mezzo Soprano/Baritone and Cello.

This CD of music by Enid Luff contains fourteen chamber and solo pieces, recorded under the auspices of Ty Cerdd, the Music Centre for Wales, in Cardiff, during October-November 2010. The performers are mainly young players who bring a great freshness of approach to the music. Many of the pieces were inspired by places and characterful venues, as for example "The Haunted Nightclub", and "Shallow Sea", and all are imbued with a vivid visual or dramatic impression.

Wind Chimes – Wind quintet

Sheet music for flute, oboe, clarinet, french horn and bassoon by Andrew Challinger. A short rhythmical piece originally written for a dance event. Only moderate difficulties, though ensemble would need some work.

Wind Chimes was written for the Seventh Berkshire Dance Gala at South Hill Park, Bracknell in 1989. Jointly commissioned by South Hill Park and dance group Praxis, it was choreographed by Praxis with music performed by the Park Wind Quintet. The original movements were based on the theme of children's games but the music has no specific interpretation. It has subsequently had concert performances. The principal musical challenge is to maintain a clear rhythmic pulse as short patterns are passed from one player to another.

The refrain of this Christmas song, to anonymous words from the 15th century, is a lullaby sung by Mary to the newborn Jesus:

Lullay myn lyking, my dere sonne, my sweeting

Lullay my dere herte, myn own dere derling.

This refrain is sung by the three-part chorus (no tenors needed!), to a charmingly simple 3/4 melody. The soprano and baritone solos (which may be taken by members of the choir) tell the story; their vocal lines are like recitatives that cannot help bursting into melody.

Go, lovely rose – Choral

Sheet music for chorus and piano by Mark Browse. Choral setting of a poem by Edmund Waller

Go, lovely rose is a bittersweet poem by the seventeenth-century poet and politician Edmund Waller. The rose in question is like his beloved because it is beautiful, and also because its beauty counts for nothing if it remains hidden.

In the startling last verse the poet draws one last parallel: the beauty of both the flower and the lady - and of all beautiful things - cannot outlast death.

The music starts sweetly and elegantly, and seems - like the poem - to use conventional means to communicate its message. But just as the poem explores the darker meanings behind the well-worn metaphor, the harmonies become less stable as the song progresses, and the bitterness of the poem's imagery starts to supplant its sweetness.

In the end, however, we are left with the rose of here and now. The poet's stark warning has been delivered, but for the moment we still have the rose and the lady, who are both 'wondrous sweet and fair'.

The stars shine bright – Choral

Sheet music for chorus, piano, flute and clarinet by Mark Browse. Christmas anthem for children's voices and/or adult female chorus, with piano accompaniment and optional flute and clarinet.

This excerpt from the oratorio The Mysteries of Joy can stand alone as a Christmas anthem for ladies' or children's voices.

It sounds best with its original instrumentation (piano, flute and clarinet), but it has been performed to great acclaim with just piano accompaniment.

The librettist, Christopher Loveless, had the idea of using children's voices for this piece, creating a sense of innocent wonder at the moment of the Nativity. However, it is just as beautiful sung by more mature soprano and alto voices.

Sheet music by Mark Browse. A setting of a poem by Walter de la Mare, for SATB chorus and piano

This setting of a poem by Walter de la Mare was a prizewinning entry in the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus's 2011 competition held to mark the choir's centenary, which was judged by a panel including Gareth Malone. The judges' comment was 'Good use of vocal textures - confident with flowing style.'

When music sounds, the poet says, he is transported away from the everyday world into a magical place. The setting (for choir and piano) reflects this, moving away from the simple phrases with which it begins, into a mysterious harmonic world, before returning triumphantly.

Adapted from my opera Margaret of Antioch. In the opera it is a solo aria for the eponymous heroine, and uses only a few of the words from the Psalm.

In 2004 I adapted the aria for the wedding of Leslie and Jane Olive, setting the whole of the Psalm and introducing parts for the choir.

Surge, Aquilo – Choral

This anthem was written for the composer's own wedding in 2001, to words chosen by the composer's wife. The imagery of the bride and bridegroom which runs through the Song of Solomon seemed to fit well with a marriage feast, as did the references to eating and drinking.

The Latin text is used because of the beautiful musicality of its vowels, and the internal sound-patterns of phrases like 'et comedat fructum pomorum suorum'.

Surge, Aquilo was performed in New York in March 2009 by the Russian Chamber Chorus of New York, as part of a concert inspired by the Song of Solomon. A member of the RCCNY commented:

This piece is permeated with so much love, beautiful and pure, a real gem, transporting the listeners into another dimension. Thank you for it!
