Before Light Ends was written in memory of composer Robert Sherlaw Johnson, in 2001; and was performed by the pianist Anna Markland. Julia Usher studied privately with Robert after meeting him during her studies at York University. The piece is permeated by the Latin chant Te Lucis Ante Terminum, sometimes hidden and sometimes disclosed; with a ciimax of dissolving and fading firework embers.
