Francois-Joseph Gossec (1734-1829) was an active and prolific composer and violinist in late 18th-century Paris. He was also a key musician of the French Revolution, writing a number of patriotic works, and after 1799 concentrated his activities as a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire.
This lively Gavotte in G major, possibly one of his most recognisable melodies, is suitable for the good intermediate bassist (c.Grade 6/7) and remains in bass clef throughout. Useful for both concert and educational use, there are simple and effective technical challenges in the lower orchestral register.
