Originally arranged for cello and piano by Alfredo Piatti (1822-1901), this lively and enjoyable Hungarian Dance (Book 3, No.1) by Johannes Brahms has been newly transcribed for double bass by David Heyes.
Suitable for the intermediate bassist (Grade 7), the dance is in ternary form offering effective musical and technical challenges within the orchestral register and is in bass clef throughout. The opening section (Andante grazioso) sets the mood with a rhythmic and imposing melody, contrasting a more energetic middle section (Vivace) consisting of running semiquavers. The final section returns to the opening material but with a more lyrical and gently moving accompaniment.
The piano accompaniment is both independent and supportive, and Hungarian Dance would be suitable as both educational and concert use. This is a lively and accessible addition to the intermediate transcription repertoire for double bass.
Available in orchestral tuning only.
