Air & Andante – Recorder Ensemble

The Air from Suite 3 (popularly known as 'Air on a G string') makes a
highly effective recorder quartet piece. The Andante from Brandenburg
number 2 is less well known, but, falling into a related key for the
arrangement, makes an apposite complementary piece, incidentally
providing a slight challenge for the bass player. Some repeated notes
will give way to the need for breath! The effort will be worth it.

            Available at tutti.co.uk: £6.67 / €8.06 / $10.30 / ¥791.71

Simon's Theme – Piano

This piece of music has two styles within it. A melodic/lyrical style and a highly charged energetic/staccatto style. Good for teaching in that it deals in very quick succession with these two completely different styles of playing. In fact Simon was one of my music students and this piece was written for him.

Huron Carol – Flute Ensemble

A beautiful piece of music for two flutes in two versions which describes the beautiful snowy and vast landscape of the North of Canada. Wide range of dynamics and colourings. One version has the two flutes on stage together, the second version has the two flutes, or flute group standing at opposite ends of the room/hall when the piece is being performed. A good performance piece for flute players and flute groups.

Contemplations – Flute

A beautiful piece of music for piano and flute. which utilizes the strings inside the piano which sound like a wash of sound. The flute plays a tone row over this, which creates a most interesting effect.

String Quartet in A minor "Echoes" - Score – String quartet

String Quartet in A minor "Echoes" is a single-movement quartet lasting about 15 minutes, written in response to a request from Stafford Music Festival for a piece evoking Shugborough Hall in Staffordshire.

James "Athenian" Stuart worked here, and the estate was significant in the story of the Greek Revival. There are echoes of some of the famous, and not so famous, musicians who have visited the estate over the last 250 years, plus a little humour mixed with a little more anguish in what is a challenging but rewarding piece to perform.

There are background notes to this rather unusual brief available on www.ardrosshouse.com, which may be of interest; but at the end of the day hopefully the music speaks for itself.

The parts are fairly demanding, and more extensive sample pages are also available on the Ardross House site.

Score & Parts (4/4/3/3/2 + parts for Vln3)

Composed for Wells Youth Music String Orchestra (WYMSO) and premiered in December 2006, this lively three movement suite is aimed at the beginner string orchestra.

"The title refers to Porto, the 'city of Granite' and is in one continuous movement with two distinct parts divided by contrasting interludes - the first part is highly rhythmic, the second more lyrical. The composer's jazz and rock career influences the energy of the first section, while in the later part he alludes to typical Portuguese accordian-accompanied folksong, recreated in transparent textures with the bass playing high over a cello drone."
Almost a Serious Duo – Double bass

Finnish composer-bassist Teppo Hauta-aho has written an extended one-movement work which makes demands of both performers. The music is evocative, atmospheric and distinctive, offering a chance to display the similarities and difference between the two instruments.

Composed for Catherine Lord (Vln) and David Heyes (Db), it is a work which should quickly enter the chamber music repertoire.

Double Bass is in Solo Tuning.

Two Sketches for Piano after poems by Browning

Two Sketches for Piano after poems by Browning – Piano

Two contrasting short characteristic pieces based on two of poet Robert Browning's most famous poems. In A Toccata of Galuppi's the speaker is listening to a toccata by the composer Galuppi and the music evokes life in 18th century Venice.

Oh Galuppi, Baldassaro, this is very sad to find!
I can hardly misconceive you; it would prove me deaf and blind;
But although I take your meaning, 'tis with such a heavy mind!
Here you come with your old music, and here's all the good it brings.
What, they lived once thus at Venice where the merchants were the kings,
Where Saint Mark's is, where the Doges used to wed the sea with rings?

By contrast in My Last Duchess the Duke of Ferrara is giving a tour to an emissary of his prospective 2nd wife and reveals a private portrait of the first, whose flirtatious nature caused the Duke to have her removed. Browning suggested that the poem could mean that the Duke had had her killed or put into a convent.

She had
A heart - how shall I say too soon made glad.
Too easily impressed; she liked whate'er
She looked on, and her looks went everywhere.
Sir, 'twas all one! My favour at her breast,

Let this harvest pass, o love

not every crop can yield

Based on themes from Robert Hugill's lyrical song cycle Let this Harvest pass, O Love (for alto and guitar), this 19th century style fantasia develops themes from the songs and give the guitarist opportunities for display.

Tell me Shepherd – Choral

Tell me shepherd, what did you do in the dark of the night?

Sat by our flocks as guardians right.

Sat and heard wolves prowling through the night.

Sat and watched snow patterning moonlight.

Short carol with words and music by Robert Hugill, with only minimal division between tenor and basses. This attractive lyrical work was premiered by London Concord Singers at the Barbican Centre and has been performed and recorded by a number of choirs, including Newport Cathedral Choir.

The Painted Lake

The Painted Lake – Alto Flute

This piece was written in 2011 for Primavera's 30th anniversary gala project, Crossing Borders.

Nancy Ruffer helped advised on the technical adventures in flute sound which is important to the piece. The extended techniques are described in the performer's notes.

The piece in performance was first accompanied by stunning photographs of the magical Lincoln Pond, taken by the composer and her sister in law, Janet Hadingham. Janet is a Fabric Artist, and her approach to the mesmerising images of the Lake was to photograph the details like abstract designs. Julia's photos evoked the mirroring reflections, the architecture of trees, the dramatic shadows of woodland bordering the lake. These images were projected during the performance.

However the idea of the piece is to create the painterly experience of the landscape in sound.

There are 6 movements:

1. Reflecting 2. Mirroring 3. Burning 4. Whistling Breath 5. Rippling 6. Leaving

The Transit of Venus

The Transit of Venus – Clarinet Ensemble

The first scientific observations of the Transit of Venus occurred in 1639; made by a 22 year old astronomer, who estimated when the event would take place; and that he could observe it from his local village church - Much Hoole in Lancashire. His famous accurate measurements allowed astronomers to make entirely new calculations on the distance of the earth from the sun.

Inscribed on the tower of the village church, are still to be seen the words SINE SOLE SILEO, on the face of the sundial. This means "Without the Sun I am Silent". I used this idea throughout the duet, as the clarinet suggests the radiant but distant sun; and the boiling langorous sax plays Venus passing across it as a black dot. When the clarinet fades, several times during the piece, venus too must fall silent. At other times, both instruments fuse into unisons or octaves, as in a "conjunction", with which the piece ends.

It is hoped to use the original recording made by the first performers of " Transit" - Ian Mitchell ( clarinet) and Christian Forshaw (Sax) - to create a film/ projection / documentary for use in observatories during the 2012 Transit; a collaboration with the University of Central Lancashire, which is near Much Hoole.
