Concerto in A minor (Solo Tuning) – Doublebass

Originally for oboe, this lively and accessible four movement concerto transcribes well for double bass offering musical and technical challenges in equal measure. This edition by David Heyes, in solo tuning, combines aspects of Frantisek Simandl's ground-breaking edition in the late 19th-century, with the original version.

AM Publications also publishes a version for orchestral tuning, and versions for double bass and string orchestra are in preparation.

Gavotte in G major – Doublebass

Francois-Joseph Gossec (1734-1829) was an active and prolific composer and violinist in late 18th-century Paris. He was also a key musician of the French Revolution, writing a number of patriotic works, and after 1799 concentrated his activities as a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire.

This lively Gavotte in G major, possibly one of his most recognisable melodies, is suitable for the good intermediate bassist (c.Grade 6/7) and remains in bass clef throughout. Useful for both concert and educational use, there are simple and effective technical challenges in the lower orchestral register.

            Available at tutti.co.uk: £4.50 / €5.41 / $6.55 / ¥600.21

Spring Song Op.31 – Doublebass

Danish composer Louis Glass (1864-1936) was a successful and prolific composer but was always in the shadow of his compatriot, Carl Nielsen. His style is distinctive and accessible, typical of the late-romantic style of the late 19th-century, and he produced a wealth of music which deserves to be better known.

Spring Song Op.31 (Frulingslied) was originally for cello but transcribes beautifully for the double bass. It would suit any good intermediate bassist with some technical skill in thumb position, and demonstrates the lyrical and cantabile qualities of the double bass. The accompaniment is expansive, restless and supportive, contrasting a more lyrical and cantabile vocal line.

Available in orchestral tuning only.

Quicksilver – Flute

'Quicksilver' - subtitled 'catch me if you can' - is a new and innovative piece by John McLeod. It was premiered by Gillian Poznansky (flute) and Mark Tanner (piano) at the Wigmore Hall, London in July 2009. During the course of the music the pianist is asked to improvise on small Tibetan bells (optional).

Two Eighteenth-Century Arias

Two Eighteenth-Century Arias – Doublebass

These two bass arias by G.F. Handel have been newly arranged for double bass by David Heyes. Each offers a range of musical and technical challenges for the good intermediate bassist, with lively and evocative accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tunings.

Revenge, Timotheus Cries is from 'Alexander's Feast' and is a lively and energetic aria in C major. Abounding in scale and arpeggio figures, it makes use of low thumb position, also using the lower register to good effect, and would make an accessible recital or study piece for any bassist of about Grade 8 standard.

Behold the Monstrous Beast is taken from 'Belshazzar' and a heroic and dramatic approach will produce a convincing and successful performance. There are technical challenges in the orchestral range of the double bass, going no higher than low thumb position, and would make a useful recital or study piece for any bassist of about Grade 8 standard.

Neither piece is too difficult for any adventurous bassist who has some technical skills on the G string and into low thumb position. The arias transcribe well for double bass and are a useful addition to the transcription repertoire.

Adagio for Double Bass and Piano – Doublebass

Originally for mandolin and cembalo, this beautiful and evocative Adagio dates from 1795. Beethoven composed a number of works for the mandolin and this rare and mainly forgotten work transcribes well for the double bass.

Transposed into C major, and arranged by David Heyes, this extended one-movement piece would be ideal for any Grade 8+ bassist who is looking for something a little different and is comfortable playing in low thumb position. The piece offers both musical and technical challenges, but a successful performance will require a sonorous and singing tone and the ability to create legato phrases in each register.

Dating from Beethoven's first years in Vienna, and still under the influence of Haydn and Mozart, the Adagio is typcal of the Classical style of the age and is a welcome addition to the transcription repertoire.

Only available in orchestral tuning.

Sonatina for French Horn and Piano – Chamber

This highly attractive three movement work is a must for all French Horn players. The first movement begins with a strong opening theme which is then interspersed with more lyrical sections. The hauntingly beautiful slow movement is followed by an exciting last movement in rondo form.
The work was written for Anthony Catterick who plays in the London Mozart Players. It has recently been recorded by Stephen Stirling on a CD to be released in 2010.

Concerto in G minor – Doublebass

G.F. Handel's Concerto in G minor, originally for oboe, was first transcribed for double bass by Frantisek Simandl (1840-1912) in the late 19th-century.

This new arangement by David Heyes, incorporating some of the Simandl edition, restores some of the missing bars from the earlier edition and returns to the original version to create a work of rhythmic energy and character for the 21st-century. The four contrasting movements offer effective musical and technical challenges for the good intermediate bassist (Grade 8+) and would make a suitable recital or study work for any player working in basic thumb position.

Handel's Concerto in G minor would fit easily into any concert, is suitable for any audience, and demonstrates the many sonorous and technical solo possibilities of the double bass.

This edition is for orchestral tuning and other editions in solo tuning or with string orchestra accompaniment are in preparation.

Humoreske Op.101, No.7 – Doublebass

Originally for piano, Antonin Dvorak's Humoresque Op.101, No.7 has been newly arranged for double bass and piano by David Heyes. This iconic and instantly recognisable melody transcribes well for the intermediate bassist and the edition includes accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tunings.

There are effective and accessible musical and melodic challenges for the adventurous player and this has much to offer as a concert or study piece. The opening theme is jaunty and picaresque, contrasting a more lyrical, romantic and dramatic middle section, returning to the simple and evocative melody to bring the piece to a successful conclusion.

Humoreske would suit a Grade 7/8 bassist with some knowledge of basic thumb position, but there are few challenges that cannot be overcome with a little work.

A sure-fire hit with audiences!

Bagatelle

Bagatelle – Doublebass

Bagatelle was composed in 1924 for the Romanian double bass virtuoso, Joseph Prunner (1886-1969). It was published a year later in Vienna, alongside a version for cello, but the composer and the piece have been largely forgotten in the intervening eighty years.

Bagatelle has a strongly percussive and rhythmic accompaniment, mainly chordal, producing a work of great energy and vitality. Two main ideas dominate the piece - a strongly insistent theme using the interval of an octave, contrasting a more lyrical and scalic theme which makes use of the cantabile and expressive qualities of the solo double bass.

The polytonal chordal accompaniment provides a strong and independent backdrop against which the double bass projects a direct and impressive solo line, primarily in the higher registers of the instrument confirming Prunner's abilities and skills as a great virtuoso.

Bagatelle has been long out of print until this edition, which is the first to include accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tunings, and also includes a cello part.

Filip Lazar was born in Craiova (Romania) on 18 May 1894 and died in Paris on 3 November 1936. He studied at the Bucharest Conservatoire from 1907-12 with Dumitru Kiriac-Georgescu (theory), Castaldi (harmony and composition) and Emilia Saegou (piano), and later at the Leipzig Conservatoire (1913-14) with S. Krehl and Teichmuller.

He combined a career as a concert pianist and composer, touring throughout Europe and America., performing a wide range of contemporary music in his recitals. He was a founder member of the Romanian Composers' Society (1920) and of the Triton modern musical society in Paris (1928), and was a significant figure in contemporary music circles at the time. Alongside his performing activities, Lazar worked as piano teacher in France and Switzerland from 1928 until his death from tuberculosis at the age of 42.

Lazar's music shows a great breadth of outlook, and Romanian folk elements were an important influence in many early works (1919-28). Serialism and neo-classicism began to have more impact on later works and his music is noted for its conciseness and vigour of form, alongside free use of dissonance, a polytonal chordal structure and brilliant orchestrations.
