Frantisek [Franz] Simandl (1840-1912) was a leading figure in the development and advancement of double bass technique in the latter part of the 19th-century.
He composed many works for double bass and his Scherzo Capriccioso Op.72 is a short and lively miniature, with a tarantella feel and spirit ever present, and is aimed at the good intermediate bassist. There are effective musical and technical challenges throughout the solo register of the instrument, with a confident, energetic and supportive piano accompaniment.
Ideal for any post-Grade 8 player with a good technical command of the double bass, this one movement piece is in ternary form contrasting a legato and sonorous middle section, framed by rhythmic, lively and capricious outer sections.
Simandl's music has fallen from favour during the 20th-century but AM Publications plan to publish a number of his original works and transcriptions to remedy this and to commemorate the centenary of his death in 2012.
This edition includes piano accompaniments for both solo and orchestral tuning.
Set for the Advanced Certificate (Trinity-Guildhall).
