The text was part of the art work broader than broadway, a site-specific installation inspired by archive material, which was a part of F-est, festival of East End Art.
The CD is a mix of the sounds transmitted in the two gallery spaces with one extra track which uses recordings made in the gallery to create a bizarre Anthem.
broader than broadway was installed in seven seven contemporary art for a two week period in October, 2003. It responded to historical and contemporary aspects of life on Broadway Market, where the gallery resides, an ancient trading route in London¹s East End. These responses address the perception of historical data, questioning value, meaning and method.
Number seventy-seven is viewed as a shop space which plays host to a range of intriguing characters. Some of these are documented in the fragmented play Bassett's Broadway Play which is referred to in the text. Descriptions of customers comings and goings were recorded, by hand, on a till roll that slowly spooled through a mechanical device, read, one word at a time, by a small camera that relayed the information to a CCTV monitor positioned in a separate space. The audio transmitted a secret, whispered narrative in one space and a concise remembrance in the other, each defused by tiny exciters attached to the wooden floor and to glass panes positioned within both spaces.
The exhibition was supported by NXT plc, seven seven contemporary art and W.C. Benstead and Son.
