These Voluntaries are a typical example of organ music for manuals only by an 18th. century English composer. They are delightful and varied pieces which are very suitable for church or recital use. These Voluntaries consist of a mixture of slow and faster, more lively movements which were written to exhibit the various registration to be used on a new instrument. Matthias Hawdon was born and died in Newcastle upon Tyne and was organist of Holy Trinity Church, Hull, Beverley Minster and Newcastle Cathedral in succession. He was a great admirer of the music of Handel this being reflected in his style of writing which was somewhere between baroque and galant.
