This new CD consists of the young Sullivan's first attempts as a composer of chamber and instrumental music written between 1858 and 1868.
Many of the works of Sullivan's youth were exercises for the piano, most of which have unfortunately not survived. Sullivan honed his skills as a pianist at the Royal Academy of Music (from 1856) and at Leipzig (from 1858) under Sir William Sterndale Bennett, and later Ignaz Moscheles, who taught Greig at the same time as Sullivan. Composition however, was to overtake performance as Sullivan's main area of study.
