Nicola Porpora was born in Naples in 1686. At the age of 10 he became one of Gaetano Greco's pupils. At the end of his ten-year long studies, he devoted himself to composing opera and sacred music and to teaching singing. The most celebrated singers of the day, Farinelli, Porporino, Caffarelli and Salimbeni, benefited from his invaluable instruction, thus helpng to spread the young maestro's fame to all European courts and theatres.
