The purpose of this set of pieces is to present challenging, but not over-extended, works for the serious student or professional using structured quarter-tone and (in two pieces) eighth-tone techniques. However, although the pieces are presented as concert material in their own right, they are also designed as follow-on material to The Quarter-Tone Recorder Manual (by Kathryn Bennetts, Donald Bousted and Peter Bowman, Moeck, 1998). Thus, in certain pieces, the composer was presented with pitch and technical limitations (by the recorder player Kathryn Bennetts) so that particular areas of difficulty or interest could be isolated and developed. The outcome, then, is a study-like exploitation of ideas which explore a wide variety of microtonal expression.
