Humphrey Clucas was born in 1941, and read English at King's College, Cambridge, where he was a Choral Scholar. He is best known for his choral music, much of it liturgical, but there is also a body of organ music and a number of instrumental pieces. His double bass music is on the syllabus of more than one exam board.
This delightful and somewhat unusual suite, making fairly modest technical demands of the players but giving opportunity for refined and expressive performance, interpolates two sacred items among three secular folk songs.
The sections are as follows:
Folk Song 1: Quand j'étais chez mon père
Folk Song 2: I sowed the seeds of love
Chorale: Jesu, meine Freude
Plainsong: Christe, qui lux es
Folk Song 3: Early one morning
