Carter Ground was inspired by a place of the same name in the English Lake District. In this area of England, Ground means the place where you have your small holding. In the music a ground or ground bass - a melodic ostinato - is used to give the work its structure.
The piece is technically suitable for clarinettists of grade 4 and upwards but musically needs greater maturity.
