Elgar's title is perhaps a little self-deprecating. These (dating from 1892) are indeed teaching pieces, but the composer's personal touch is all over them and they show affectionate care, both in general aspects and in the detail of both violin and piano parts; this makes these last two all the more suitable for a string-orchestra transcription. Elgar's expertly-conceived bowings and other markings have been respected in the arrangement.
