Arrangement for cello and choir of Robert Hugill's inspiring solo motet Faith, Hope and Charity. The cello sings the high solo line with its long cantilena whilst the choir provides a lyrical accompaniment. The original text is based on the passage from I Corinthians, not all the text is sung as the cello takes the solo line
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels
and have not charity I am become as a sounding brass
or a tinkling cymbal.
Though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor and have not charity
It profiteth me nothing, nothing
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, but the greatest of these
is charity, love.
Charity suffereth long, and is kind;
Charity envieth not
Charity vaunteth not itself is not puffed up
Charity never faileth
Rejoiceth not in iniquity
But rejoiceth in truth, in truth
Faith, hope charity
For now we see through a glass darkly
but then face to face
Now I know in part,
but then I shall know, even also as I am known.
The greatest of these is charity, love
