A few may find this popular movement over-sweet, but did its composer, whose taste was unfailingly impeccable, ever write anything really sugary? Charm? Yes, in spades. Pink icing? Not a trace, surely, unless its gentle character is distorted by self-indulgent playing.
Many lovely, deft touches in the detail, along with delightful melodic inspiration, make this piece an unfading miniature classic.
The 'Dolly' Suite was written for piano duet. This movement was set in E major in the original.
