Inspired by the artist Cecil Collins, London-based American composer James d'Angelo has written an inventive and atmospheric tone poem for solo double bass.
The 13-minute work employs the use of harmonics (the angel), fast pizzicato (the fool) and double stops (the city) to create a work of great character and energy.
James D'Angelo has written a number of works for double bass, producing music which has a clarity of texture and purpose and offers more than just technical challenges for the good intermediate bassist.
