This curious piece for solo double bass was conceived during a sleepless night on a Cross-Channel ferry to Holland - without benefit of paper, pencil or computer. That might explain its form, as four very short themes with several variations from which the player can choose, within a framework set down by the composer. Very short themes were more than enough for the composer to hold in mind until paper and pencil were found in the morning! The premiere was given by Corrado Canonici, and recently the work formed part of the final recital by a higher degree candidate (she got it).
