Jane writes in an approachable contemporary classical idiom but - be warned - she enjoys asymetrical rhythms and this piece is no exception, hence the fact that it is supplied in four player scores for clarity of ensemble. Mathmatrix has been composed in an abstract, sometimes mathmatical, way but feedback from the good amateur players on the recorded extract available here is that the sections nevertheless conjure up personal moods and soundscapes. (Perhaps this is a bit like saying that the scenery is always so good in radio plays!) A performance of Mathmatrix lasts around 7 minutes.
Jane Wells, has a catalogue of around fifty compositions. They range from half evening music-theatre, choral and orchestral pieces to short instrumental solos and duos that are eminently programmable concert pieces. Her first pieces date from the mid 1970s.
