Josef Gungl (1810-1889) was a popular Hungarian composer, bandleader and conductor. He was very prolific, writing more than 450 dances which were performed throughout Europe and beyond, and his works are known for their easy-flowing melodies, well marked rhythm and effective orchestrations.
Neujahrs-Gruss (New-Year Greetings) was transcribed for double bass trio by David Heyes and offers much for the adventurous intermediate ensemble. There are musical and technical challenges in equal measure, and Bass 1 will need to be confident in thumb position.
The piece has a great rhythmic momentum, contrasted by a more relaxed middle section (Trio), and would be suitable for any audience or occasion. It could be used as both concert or educational repertoire and the sheer joie de vivre will prove popular with players.
