Schoepsdau's "New York Mass" is based on the English text of the mass, which is subject to musical interpretation. "New York Mass" employs a great variety of styles. Thus the composer combines swinging jazz sections and flowing Latin rhythms with thrilling funk and gospel elements, creating an amazingly homogeneous work. "In Schoepsdau's oeuvre, there are authentic styles to be found: harmonically and rhythmically advanced jazz with improvisatory elements, and also pop ballads and gospel-like choral movements.
