This piece was commissioned by the John Lewis Partnership for its series of customer concerts in October 1998. Bedford's innovative approach to composition is strongly apparent - the concerto requires the soloist to move around the orchestra, reacting to each instrumental section in turn, starting with the basses, swapping the oboe for a cor anglais to join the cellos and taking on the violins in the last movement to see who can play faster.
