Czech-born Adolf Lotter (1871-1942) was one of the leading bass players of his generation and lived in London from 1894. He studied composition with Antonin Dvorak and double bass with Frantisek Cerny, and composed many works for orchestra during his years in Britain.
The Ragtime Bass Player was composed and published in 1913 at the height of the ragtime era, and has been popular for almost a century. There are few challenges for the intermediate bassist, and the piece offers effective musical and technical challenges.
