Russian pianist-composer Nicolai Medtner wrote these Romantic Sketches for the Young, Op. 54 in 1931-1932, in repsonse to a request from his publisher for a new work "of moderate difficulty".
Having written many piano works in the form of Skazki (a Russian word meaning fairy tales), Medtner chose here another four tales, each paired with a prelude:
