Picture of Sheet music for piano solo by Nicolai Medtner

Russian pianist-composer Nicolai Medtner wrote these Romantic Sketches for the Young, Op. 54 in 1931-1932, in repsonse to a request from his publisher for a new work "of moderate difficulty".

Having written many piano works in the form of Skazki (a Russian word meaning fairy tales), Medtner chose here another four tales, each paired with a prelude:

  1. Prelude: Pastoral (Allegretto con moto abbandonamente)
  2. Skazka: Bird's (Allegretto con moto capriccioso e sempre leggiero)
  3. Prelude: Tempo di Sarabanda (Andantino mobile)
  4. Skazka: Scherzo (Allegro vivace)
  5. Prelude: Tender Reproach (Allegretto, molto tranquillo e commodo)
  6. Skazka: The Organ Grinder (Allegro assai)
  7. Prelude: Hymn (Allegretto tranquillo)
  8. Skazka: The Beggar (Narrante)

Nicolai Medtner is becoming recognised as one of the most significant Russian composers of piano music, and these pieces are among his most characteristic, full of imagination and enchantment.
