.This fine, very well-known movement is given here in an arrangement which aims to make the most of the medium of strings without going beyond the spirit of the original.
The piece takes the form of a theme followed by two variations. The notes of Handel's keyboard original (whose first edition is given in the download set on a separate sheet) are largely adhered to, with some fleshing-out of the texture and a little more freedom in the repeat of the second variation, as the piece approaches its close.
The arrangement can be played by a string quartet, using the alternative cello part supplied in the download set.
