This evocative and textural piece was inspired by the landscape of Northern Germany's Friesian Islands, where at low tide inlets sparkle with shining mudflats. The three wind instruments represent in the texture the voices of seabirds, without directly imitating bird calls. The “shine” of the wind tone stands out against the repeating lower-register surge of the piano part to evoke the memory of a wild shoreline of great natural beauty. Shallow Sea was first performed at the Beaumaris Festival, and has been very well received at the New Wind Festival in London and other venues. The playing time is 7 minutes.
