Sonnet takes its form from the Shakespearean Sonnet. A love poem, it also reflects some of the ambiguities, puns and cross-referencing in the model. Written in the late summer of 2002, SONNET was commissioned for and first performed at the Shakespeare Birthday Concert, April 2003, by the Orchestra of the Swan, Stratford-upon-Avon.
The orchestration is for a string orchestra with the leaders of the sections (except the double basses) also acting as a String Quartet. The duration is approximately 5 minutes.
