Squirrel and Cat is actually part of a much larger work called Squirrel Song (A Day in the Life of Squirrel). Squirrel Song is written for flute, flute headjoint, oboe, oboe reed, B flat clarinet, B flat trumpet, trumpet mouthpiece and 2 pianos. It was commissioned by David Ian Foster.
This section of Squirrel Song; which I'm calling Squirrel and Cat has the sub-title Squirrel Has a Committee Meeting about the Neighbour's Cat. The unusual instrumentation was such fun (flute headjoint, oboe reed and B flat clarinet) that I felt it would work as an interesting short musical moment on its own.
So the question is - does the cat come to the committee meeting? Or is the meeting excusively a squirrel event. I will leave it up to the performers to decide.
This piece is definitely not tonal or traditional; but does use mostly traditional time signatures, and is definitely approachable/playable.
So here it is. Enjoy
