String Quartet in A minor "Echoes" is a single-movement quartet lasting about 15 minutes, written in response to a request from Stafford Music Festival for a piece evoking Shugborough Hall in Staffordshire.
James "Athenian" Stuart worked here, and the estate was significant in the story of the Greek Revival. There are echoes of some of the famous, and not so famous, musicians who have visited the estate over the last 250 years, plus a little humour mixed with a little more anguish in what is a challenging but rewarding piece to perform.
There are background notes to this rather unusual brief available on www.ardrosshouse.com, which may be of interest; but at the end of the day hopefully the music speaks for itself.
The parts are fairly demanding, and more extensive sample pages are also available on the Ardross House site.
