Time Pieces was commissioned by the Cambridge Clarinet Choir. The titles and ideas for the music were inspired by T.S.Eliot, Four Quartets:
1. Sudden in a shaft of sunlight
2. Comets weep and leonides fly
3. You are the music, while the music lasts
4. Half heard, in the stillness
The work is for players of a professional standard and lasts approximately 13 minutes. Some special techniques such as loose-lipped embouchure and sub-tone are used and there is one short passage of improvisation.
The instrumentation is Eb(2) Bb(4) Eb alto(2) Bb bass(2) Eb contra alto (1) with C clarinet alternative to Eb 2.
